Taking on, passing and moving on

In my spare time I am soccer coach for the youth of AVV Alphen. There I teach them that on the field it is all about taking on, passing and moving on, and then taking on the next ball. That is what almost the whole game of soccer is about, that is the mindset you have to have to be able to score goals.

The great thing is that what they learn on the soccer field now, they take with them into the rest of their lives. When they get into business later, it’s also about being able to take on, pass and move on.

On the job with the right mindset

On the field I’m a trainer, at OptimaData I’m a staffing consultant. But even then, I make sure that our people have that mindset. Whether it’s someone from our core team of independents, or an employee of OptimaData itself, we expect you to take on the job with that mindset of accept, fit and move on. Whether it’s short-term or long-term goals, that’s the only way you can score.

  • Taking on: Just like in soccer, in work you must first figure things out and be properly open and free for the proverbial ball, only then can you take it.
  • Passing: Here it’s all about quality. As in soccer, the pass should not be too hard, but also not too soft. And, very importantly, it must go to the right player!
  • Moving on: If you stand still after your pass, you are no longer participating. You have to keep moving to be able to take on another ball.

‘You don’t hire for skills, you hire for attitude’

This quote from Simon Sinek is a great one for me, both in the field and at work. Because what happens when the skill that was central becomes obsolete? If the person you hired or drafted just for a specific skill doesn’t have the attitude and aptitude to learn the next one, you’re stuck.

But if you hire someone because of their competency to adopt, adapt and move with you, you’ll get a long way. These competencies are timeless and are the foundation of learning and growth. Not only on the soccer field, but also in your working life, it’s about flexibility, about having the right energy. That’s how you get a lot further. That’s where we like to help you.

The power of external experts

Because hiring, fitting and moving on is in our DNA, our people are shaped by this, they make a big difference in every new environment they are put into. And then it also becomes fun to keep developing in this flow. Due to the nature of our work, we are constantly with changing clients, new environments, new people.

By applying the mindset of hire, fit and move on, this is how an external can truly add value. Over and over again. That is the power of external experts.
